No. It's not a problem, it's just the result of physics, based on the angle of incidence and other factors. Looking straight down in water mostly provides a view straight into the water (as you see here). Even at a much flatter angle of incidence when the water surface reflects much more of the light, the reflection is about 8X less bright than the direct view of an object, that's why photographers often use a 3 stop GND filter to balance out the direct and reflected images. There are a few of the brighter stars reflecting in the lower right corner, but the more dim ones get diffused by slight movement in the water's surface during 30 second exposures, so they don't show up. Combine all these factors, and you get exactly what you see here.Jeff Sullivanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02256796802024209239noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33143996.post-46487914397990454502012-11-30T21:37:33.322-08:002012-11-30T21:37:33.322-08:00You Rock! In general, I find that most of my best stuff seems to come during roughly the second full week of October, extending just bit on either side of that.

The variations are interesting and tricky to learn. Some of the variations are pretty clear. For examples, higher elevations tend to change earlier. (And in some years you might be too late for a few of them if you arrive on that one-week-into-October schedule!) You can work your way down from the highest trailheads (or even further up if you are willing to hike) in early October and find great color during the middle of the month or even a bit later sometimes right down into the lowlands.

There are also some north to south variations, but these are a bit tricky and often seem to be over-ridden by the elevation differences, local variations, and even the patterns of winter snow. For example, a few odd little spots - such as high along the road to Virginia Lakes - seem to turn earlier that other nearby areas that are otherwise similar. And certain more protected areas - like Lee Vining Canyon and similar - often come into color quite a bit later.

I've been trying to understand this for some years now. At first I thought that I could uncovered some basic logic to it and make things more predictable. I'd say that I've had _partial_ success, but I've been surprised often enough that I'm more humble about actually quantifying everthing.

Good luck!

DanG Dan Mitchellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07586632709438894856noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33143996.post-77056609201729174502012-09-23T18:48:11.416-07:002012-09-23T18:48:11.416-07:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12169243291446790752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33143996.post-68814621189366714562012-09-05T21:48:09.745-07:002012-09-05T21:48:09.745-07:00This image is awesome, but my mind cannot process ...This image is awesome, but my mind cannot process that the reflection doesnt match up. It's designed to make the editing of multiple photos easier, so it saves a lot of time.

The best editing though is done before the shutter on the camera ever opens: envision what you want to accomplish and plan for the light you want, adjust the composition for the appropriate focus on what you want to be the subject and for the desired reaction from your audience, use appropriate filters and shutter speed in support of that plan.

If you achieve your goals for the moment and for the exposure, post-processing is mainly to remove any artifacts introduced by the camera: dust spots, correct white balance, adjust shadows and highlights to be more like what you perceived onsite, restore contrast and so on.
